Three of those are ‘core’ exams which must be taken, and one is an elective. An extremely important and fully acknowledged ‘elective’ is the CompTIA-Security+ , which for obvious purposes is starting to become increasingly more favoured by students. The ‘MCSE’ comprises of seven MCP examinations, that reflect the increased importance placed upon organisational security, systems-planning & network-design.

Industry recognised accreditations can be obtained from the suppliers themselves & vendor neutral organisations. A number of well-regarded independents are today supplying progressively more appropriate and essential qualifications. It’s now become well recognised that knowledge of inter-connectivity and technological-convergence is becoming incredibly important in networks.

There are today a number of seismic shifts taking place in the world of networking – both in terms of processing and in data-storage, with internet-based computing gaining presence and ‘green I.T.’ getting to be more and more relevant. From the business perspective, greener technology has to be built to be more cost-effective, in addition to being more gentle towards the environment. Computers will generate less heat (and so require less cooling) if they have lower-power processors. These two things together greatly lower the fuel expenditure, and so affect a firm’s bottom-line — particularly in data-centres & high volume processing departments.

You still have to you approve the User Account Control (UAC) the first time you install Firefox, but for all subsequent versions, it will automatically update without your approval. This is the same update procedure that Google Chrome has been using on Windows for more than a year with few if any known negative consequences…

As with other professional training tracks, you should develop a specific plan of the ambitions you want to accomplish, so the correct mile-stones can be fulfilled along the way. Any time you really don’t start with the end objective in mind, but purely enrol on what looks like the most ‘reasonable’ program, you could possibly wind up in the wrong place altogether! Programming & software certifications aren’t really easy to understand, and if you do not choose them carefully it could appear that you’re walking through a minefield! Our IT advisors can help to simplify things to suit your needs. Please don’t throw away your time and energy (& quite a lot of your hard earned money) by passing up on this critical step.

We associate ‘forensics’ with television shows like CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). The physical reality of Computer Forensics is very much less glamorous than pictured in these programmes (clearly!) But for many, it provides a very interesting and rewarding role within technology based analysis. A Computer Forensics professional will find and interpret ‘digital artefacts’ that are frequently used to resolve offences.

Seated between Digital Forensics and Security, is the new field of Ethical Hacking. The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) & the ‘Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator’(‘CHFI’) are medium to advanced level accreditations supplied by the EC Council.

Facebook has set the share price for its initial public offering (IPO) this month at $28 to $35 a share, which will value the company at up to $95bn.

The listing on the open stock market is set to realise the highest value to date for an internet firm, far outstripping Google’s IPO valuation of more than $23bn in 2004.

Yet the higher valuation falls short of the $100bn that was predicted when Facebook started talking about an IPO in late 2011.

Facebook is set to start promoting its share offering on 7 May, with shares expected to start trading on 18 May and raise $12bn for the company with more than 10% of the business up for sale…

Whether you are looking to achieve a beginner’s knowledge of these systems and packages, or perhaps a more complete professional understanding so you can support others, there are several certifications which could help. To learn about ‘Office’ 2003 (XP) consider ‘MOS’ – Microsoft Office Specialist. For Office 2007 (‘Vista’) skill-sets choose ‘MCAS’ – ‘Microsoft Certified Application Specialist’. The ‘MCDST’ (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician) takes this on to the next level, so that you’re certified to support others.

Alternatively, you may be looking to get into a professionally skilled job within the IT market, & want advanced level ‘Microsoft’ accreditation. In an attempt to up-grade their professional level accreditation programs, MS have fairly recently re-structured a number of their examinations. ‘Microsoft Certified IT Professional’ (MCITP) and Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (‘MCTS’) are now being brought in, however a number of ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ (MCP) examinations remain current. ‘MCTS’ training programs are generally worked on as building blocks to the ‘MCITP’.

This particular field is one of the largest and most all-encompassing areas in the world of I.T. It would take far too long to become an expert in all factors, & so specialisation is vital to some level. Both Cisco & Microsoft produce systems to operate in sector. The actual software side of Networks is MS’s department, & the hard-ware side (routers, controllers & data-switches and so on.) is where Cisco primarily works. Each of the vendors have moved heavily in to Security during the last decade, through commercial necessity.

Equally in this field we are finding the significant growth of wireless networking. And next we come on to the dark art of Hacking (legally) and Forensics – each very complex and highly specialised subjects themselves, & take a considerable amount of working experience and understanding.
